PRETORIA - Gauteng Province’s immediate implementation of the 72-Hour Activation Plan, resulted in the swift apprehension of five suspects alleged to have been involved in the cash-in-transit robbery that occurred yesterday morning in Montana, north east of Pretoria in Gauteng.

On 01 September 2020 at about 10:00, the police responded to a CIT robbery that had just occurred at Zambezi Junction in Montana. It is alleged that a group of unknown men approached a security guard walking out of a liquor outlet with a money bag. One of the suspects shot at the security guard while his accomplices grabbed the money bag. Whilst the suspects were trying to flee the scene, the driver of the amounted vehicle noticed what was happening and he managed to corner the suspect with the money bag. Others fled the scene empty handed in a white vehicle.

The injured security guard was airlifted to the hospital for medical attention while the cornered suspect was taken into custody. The Province immediately implemented the 72-Hour Activation Plan and the mobilized team followed up on information which led them to a safe house used by the suspects at a security complex Pretoria North. Four more suspects were arrested and the police seized two unlicensed firearms and the white vehicle that was used during the robbery.

All five suspects will be appearing in Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon facing charges that include armed robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The National Commissioner has praised the team that has traced and arrested the suspects and commended them for the swift manner in which they implemented the 72-Hour Activation Plan. “I am pleased of the hard work that went into apprehending the alleged robbers within a few hours after the robbery. CIT robberies are crimes that create fears in our communities. We will continue to counter the criminals modus operandi and together with the banking and security industries we will reduce this heinous crime.” said General Sitole.
