Media Statement MATATIELE - An unprecedented number of 67 vehicles were handed over to police stations in the Province to augment crime fighting operations and increased visibility of our members in the fight against crime. The vehicles were handed over today, 18 November 2020 as part of the 2020/2021 Safer Festive Season Operations. The launch of the Provincial Safer Festive Season Operations is aimed at ensuring citizens and visitors of/to the Eastern Cape are safe and secure during this holiday season and beyond. The distribution of 67 vehicles, worth more than R26 million were as follows: Alfred Nzo District: 23 Chris Hani District: 14 OR Tambo: 9 Joe Gqabi: 7 Nelson Mandela Bay District: 4 Buffalo City District: 4 Amathole District: 3 Sarah Baartman District: 3 The breakdown of the vehicles are as follows: 4 x 2 Toyota Truck Utility with Canopy: 45 VW Golf GTIs: 9 4 x 2 Mahindra MPV: 6 BMW 320i: 5 4 x 2 Isuzu Utility Truck: 1 VW Polo: 1 Messages of support were delivered by a local Councillor, Community Policing Forum, Junior Management Core (Head Office) and Youth Peace, Safety & Security Ambassador in the United Nations and National Head. During her address, the Provincial Commissioner indicated that, “we are here today according to what has become our tradition and custom to launch the annual event of the SAPS, the Safer Festive Season Operations 2020/2021. It is worthwhile to explain that the decision to launch it in this part of the province, underscores the level of respect and responsiveness of the SAPS leadership to the plight of our communities in the area of Matatiele. In other words, as we continue with our crime prevention initiatives and operations, we also conduct an assessment of each of our policing areas to identify critical challenges facing the people”. MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mrs Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe while delivering the keynote address added, “statistics illustrate that this is the period when criminals are at busiest. This is the time when they are out in full force, to try and steal your hard earned money targeting your bonuses and your stockvel shares”, she said. In conclusion, MEC Tikana-Gxothiwe urged those present to,’ work together to bring about positive change to our communities for now and for generations to come”. After this launch police will be deployed in different towns, urban and rural epicentres. Police appeal to the public to be patient at our roadblocks and during this time law enforcement officials will be dependent upon the cooperation of motorsits, holidaymakers and the communities to ensure that the operations are carried out with the least possible disruptions. We also urge all patriotic citizens to anonymously or voluntarily supply information to the police in our quest to combat crime. Ends
