PORT ELIZABETH - Swift action upon information received led to the arrest of a 32-year-old gang member and the recovery of a possible stolen firearm yesterday evening, 06 December 2020.

It is alleged that at about 21:30, PE Flying Squad acted on information received of a gang member possibly in possession of a firearm in Malabar Ext 6.  Back up was requested and the Crime Combatting Unit assisted their Flying Squad colleagues in searching a vast and dense bushy area. The suspect was soon spotted and as he tried to run from police, he was apprehended. A .22 pistol and ammunition was found in his possession.

Ownership is being determined and the firearm will be sent to ballistics for analysis. Brendon September appeared in the Gelvandale Magistrates’ Court today, 07 December 2020 on a charge of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition and is remanded in custody until 14 December 2020.

This weekend, a total of 9 firearms were recovered across the metro.

Acting Mount Road Cluster Commander, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso has hailed these confiscations as a victory for police. ‘There are now 9 less firearms circulating among criminals in our metro. We appreciate the anonymous ‘tip-offs ‘from the community and we urge them to continue to provide information about crime and criminals. Only if we work together can we achieve our objective of a crime free society. I encourage the communities to use the Amnesty period to hand in their unwanted/unlawful firearms or parts thereof before the 31 January 2020 without fear of being prosecuted for such unlawful possession,’ added Brigadier Kupiso.
