Media Statement PARKTOWN - The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has commended alertness of Soweto Flying Squad members who intercepted a suspicious vehicle, recovered three rifles and arrested two suspects in Ennerdale precinct during the afternoon of 26 August 2023. It is reported that the members were patrolling along the Golden Highway on route to the N1 Highway, Grasmere when they spotted a Volkswagen Polo Vivo with three occupants. They stopped the vehicle and when approaching, the driver fled to the nearby veld. The other two occupants left in the vehicle were apprehended following a search and discovery of two R5 rifles and one AK-47 rifle with a lot of ammunition. The Provincial Commissioner has commended the members’ vigilance and effective arrest. “Our resolve to deal decisively with the proliferation of illegal firearms in Gauteng in order to combat violent crimes continues to bear positive results with every illegal firearm removed from circulation,” said Lt Gen Mawela. The arrested suspects will be charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The police are tracing the suspect that fled the scene.
